Another school death

by Sandasen Marasinghe

Residents of Bolawatta, Waikkala are in shock following the death of a 11-year-old student of Lunuwila Central College who died of burn injuries suffered in school.

Warnakulasuriya Krishan Madushanka suffered burns on Monday when he fell into an unprotected garbage pit which had been set on fire. He was attempting to add some garbage to the pit when he suddenly fell into it. He succumbed to his injuries at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital yesterday.

A school teacher who attempted to rescue the child also suffered injuries and is being treated at the Colombo National Hospital.

The children in Grade 5 and 6 had been collecting teak leaves in the school garden in a 'Shramadana Campaign' organised by the teachers under the guidance of the principal on Monday.

The pit which was more than six feet deep and 20 feet wide had been excavated in July. This was revealed at an inquest held on the death of Warnakulasuriya Krishan Madushanka of Bolawatta, Waikkala held before the City Coroner Edward Ahangama.

M. A. Charith Lakmal (11) of Koswatta, a classmate of the victim said in evidence that they were collecting teak leaves under the supervision of a male teacher and a female teacher in the Shramadana Campaign. The garbage pit was on fire and the victim went with his friend Manoj Gayan to put the dustbin in it. All of a sudden Madushanka slipped and fell into the pit and he cried for help.

"Then 'Channa sir' jumped in the pit and attempted to rescue Madushanka but he too suffered injuries," Charith said. Then the other teachers and drivers of school vans who rushed to the scene took them out, having extinguished the fire.

Mary Wasanthi Fernando (38) mother of the victim said that she was informed of the incident around 9.30 a.m. The victim was her second of three children. The City Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death due to burn injuries. Evidence was led by Wennappuwa Police.

Last week, a student of Minuwangoda Nalanda Vidyalaya died when he fell into an unprotected well.
