Serendib Air to fly to Trincomalee By Shirajiv Sirimane Serendib Express will be the first airline in Sri Lanka to operate domestic flights to China Bay. The flights are expected to commence from end of this month. The Petroleum Corporation and the Sri Lanka Air Force has set up a refuelling plant at the China Bay which made it possible for domestic air lines to operate to this destination. According to a senior official of the Serendib Express, Dharshana Gunaratne, they would be operating one flight a week to Trincomalee and later increase it according to the demand. "At present the airline operates five flights a week to Jaffna and we will have one flight to stop over in China Bay. The return flight from Jaffna would touch down in China Bay again." "The airline has already opened a ticketing office in Trincomalee and we have received a lot of bookings for the two destinations." He said that the China Bay and Jaffna flight would be very popular and the Colombo Trincomalee would be in demand especially by the tourists. "The China Bay destination would be ideal for tourists to visit Trincomalee and Polonnnaruwa as well." The Colombo China Bay flight would take around 35 minutes while the China Bay and Jaffna flight would take 20 minutes. He said the airline operates their own 18-seater aircraft and they are now looking at extending their services to Ampara. Gunaratne said that next year the group is planning to operate scheduled charters to India and selected destinations in Middle East. Serendib Express, which was the second domestic airline to operate in Sri Lanka, is now fully owned by NAT Aviation of Florida USA. The airline operates an US built Fairchild III flight, which is manned by a US and New Zealand crew and a cabin crew from the former SriLankan airlines. |
