Sampath meet Police in final by Ken de Joodt In a ravishing, rousing game of great basketball fare, Sampath Bank beat the fancied Delmege Sports Club, to enter the final of the 'A' Division on Friday 12th instant at 7 p.m. Sampath will meet the gallant Police team, which will be a 'scorcher', at the Police Depot Courts, Bambalapitiya. This tournament has proved to be a fore-runner for Sri Lanka basketball and has produced excellent performances, with much interest been generated among the players and the spectators. Immense spadework has been done by the Colombo District Basketball Association, spearheaded by its president Dinesh Fernando and by the Colombo Basketball Club, who are affiliated to the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation. Happy are the main sponsors of this prestigious tournament, Mitsui OSK Lines (Pvt) Ltd., headed by Dilrukshan Tillekeratne, Managing Director, as well as the co-sponsors Maersk Logistics and Suren Ragavan of TDS Holdings, who have extended their unstinted support to make this a roaring success. Ajith Kuruppu, the National Coach of Basketball in Sri Lanka, said, "Many new players are seen as potential national players and the encouragement given by the sponsors has been overwhelming, which will prove greatly beneficial to the country and basketball in general. The Final will be well worth watching and will produce high-class basketball". In the Women's "A" Division Track Masters will meet Josephians in the final to be played at Police Deport Courts on the same day at 5.00 p.m. Today at 730 p.m. the final of the Men's "B" Division will be worked off at the Police Depot Courts. |
