Ratnasiri retained as national TT coach by Chris Dhambarage Former Sri Lanka player and former President of the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka P.D. Ratnasiri has been re-appointed as the national table tennis coach. Ratnasiri first coached the Sri Lanka team at the inaugural SAARC Asian Junior Championships held in Bangladesh in 1997. He had the honour of producing the gold medal winners in the boys' doubles events and the bronze medals in the girls team event. In 1990 Ratnasiri was selected to coach the national pool along with Jothipala Samaraweera. In the same year he was selected to coach the senior women's pool and the national 'B' pool. He was the coach of Niranjala Perera of Methodist College who emerged as the girls junior national champion in 1981 and 1982. In addition he was the coach of Chamara Dushmantha of Thurstan College who went on to win the Junior National Championships in 1990 and the National Championships in 1992 and 1996. P. D. Ratnasiri was appointed as the Vice President of the TTASL in 2001/2002 and President of the TTASL in 2002/2003. Earlier he functioned as the Secretary of the TTASL in the year 2000/2001. He also held the Post of Chairman, Coaching and Development Committee of the TTASL in 1996 and Secretary of the Coaching and Development Committee in 1995. Ratnasiri began his table tennis career at the age of 24 years and was the runner-up in the Novices Men's Singles event at the inaugural Bhora Table Tennis Championships in 1975. He then won the intermediate men's singles title at the Highway Authority Table Tennis Tournament held in 1976 and emerged as Sri Lanka's number four in 1980 and 1981. He was a regular player in the Sri Lankan team from 1980 to 1995 and represented the national team in a number of local and international tournaments. Ratnasiri is determined to improve the playing standards among the junior players in district levels by conducting coaching camps and work shops. |
