World Cup qualifying round matches may be played in Kandy

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy sports corr.

"World Cup Rugby Sevens will be held in Hongkong in 2005 and the qualifying round matches will be played in 2004 and discussions are going on whether the qualifying rounds for the teams from the Asian Region could be played concurrently with the Singer Sri Lankan Rugby Sevens in Kandy next year," said the Secretary General of the Asian Rugby Football Union, James Scott at a media briefing held at the Bogambara Stadium on Monday.

James Scott said if this event is to take place in Sri Lanka next year a lot of formalities had to be worked off as top national teams from the region will scrum down for honours. Discussions are also on to obtain International Rugby Board status for Singer Sri Lankan Rugby Sevens which will involve a royalty payments and TV rights will also go to the IRB. But finality has been not reached in any of these matters as they are still in the discussion stage, concluded James Scott.

Singer Sri Lanka Rugby International Sevens organised by the Kandy Sports Club to coincide with their 125th anniversary celebrations in 1999 has grown from strength to strength with around 16 nations participating and equal number of school teams providing every year three days of pulsating rugby in Kandy which is now in the forefront of rugby dominance spearheaded by winning ways of Kandy Sports Club. This is the biggest rugby carnival in Sri Lanka if not Asia every year. Chairman of UNP and the Trustee of Kandy Sports Club, Malik Samarawickrema told this correspondent that they are with the SLRFU to get IRB status for the Singer Sri Lankan Rugby Sevens and we are prepared for it, if they get the IRB status. There is nothing to worry as the sponsorship with Singer Sri Lanka Ltd. is for five years, he said.

Chairman of the Singer Sri Lankan Rugby Sevens and Secretary of Kandy Sports Club former Sri Lanka, Trinity and Kandy SC flanker Iswan Omar said that it will be grand if we could get IRB status and we are working on it and if everything goes well we should get it but before that a lot of spade work had to be done.
