By Bernad Perera

The Dinamina/Nestomalt Regional Marathon the third for the year 2003 will be held on September 27 from Weligama to Matara. The organisers expect a record number of entries. These details were disclosed at a press briefing held at Bay Beach Hotel, Weligama.

DIG Southern Range W. D. Prathapasinghe was given the chairmanship of the organising committee at this briefing. Bandula Egodage speaking said that all regional marathons held during the last fourteen years was conducted with most assistance from the police service. If not for their co-operation it would not have been successful up to date.

DIG Prathapasinghe speaking told that the Nestle Lanka Ltd has done a great service towards the society by way of conducting this event for 14 years.

This they have conducted in a brilliant manner right through the years and it has brought in the best results not only to the country at large but also to regions where it was held.

The main organisers have always looked for the assistance from the police department which my department has readily accepted and helped them.

He said "this sort of activity taking place in various parts of the country is a good sign. As everyone knows the society needs more and more sporting activity done in areas where the younger generation could participate.

These could prevent the young ones moving towards nefarious activities. This what the parent's and intellectuals expect to guide the society towards discipline. Dinamina/Nestomalt Marathon has been able to achieve the best towards this cause, he said.

These events have to be continued in this country if we are to achieve peace and a healthy society, as such it becomes a duty for us to co-operate with the organisers to make this event a success.

Drug addiction has become a main problem in the society today. This have to be eradicated at any cost, he said.

Sporting events of this nature could turn the youngsters towards another track from which they become champions.

Even the ones who have taken to drugs could be rehabilitated through sports that is why I say sports is vital for all ages. Prathapasinghe assured the organiser all necessary assistance for the event and also thanked the main organiser for bringing the marathon to the Southern province which could encourage the youngsters for sports.
