Forty-one dead in eastern India floods BHUBANESHWAR, India, Monday (AFP) Forty-one people have died and three million displaced from their homes due to a worsening flood situation in the eastern Indian coastal state of Orissa, officials said Sunday. Nearly two-thirds of the state have been affected by the rising waters in the past 10 days. Officials said more than 1,300 villages have been marooned and large swathes of land devastated by the floods. Chief administrator in Orissa state government, P.K. Mohanty, said that the authorities were worried as the weather office has forecast more rains in the coming days. Rescue teams from the coast guard, army and navy have been carrying out continous relief and rescue operations in the worst-hit districts. |
