Wattala, Delmege, Police and Sampath Bank qualify for semis

Wattala BC beat Colombo BC in their last group match of the "A" division competition of the Colombo Super League 2003 to book a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.

This game was played at the Depot Police Courts, Bambalapitiya on Wednesday. Both teams came into the game needing a win to proceed further in the competition but Wattala played better and won the game - 65-69. Wattala will play Police SC in one semi-final while Sampath Bank will take on Delmege in the other semi. For the winners, Maxwell Saranapala, Rajeeva Fonseka and Thilina Jayarathna played well while Gayan Samaraweera and Eranga Weerasinghe excelled for the losers.

In another "A" division match at the same venue Colombo Bulls beat Sri Lanka Army by just two points. Although the game was a low scoring affair it was keenly contested. The final scores read 57-55.

That ended Army's miserable competition where they failed to win a single game. Colombo Bulls the defending champions went out having won only two matches. For the winners Ranil Ganegama scored 24 points while Duke Rajapaksa netted in 10. For the soldiers Charith Rodrigo top scored with 20 points while Charitha Kulawardene scored 15.

In a women's "A" division match at St. Joseph's Girls School, Nugegoda Track Master suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Josephians BC by two points. Track Master the favourites to win the competition led for the most part of the game but lost control of the situation in the last few seconds and that cost them dearly.

At half time the losers were leading 44-34 but yet they crashed to defeat 69-67. For the winners Prasadini Wijesinghe top scored with 20 points while Rukshika Wijesinghe and Jayaliya Kumari netted 12 points each. For the losers Premila Fernando top scored with 19 points while Danushka Wijesinghe and Inoka Sandamali scored 14 points apiece.

In the men's "B" division competition Maroons BC and NYSC booked their places in the semi-finals when they recorded wins against Maharagama BC and Dehiwala BC respectively. While Maroons recorded an easy five points win over Maharagama, NYSC thrashed Dehiwala by 20 points. For Maroons Mithila Abeysekera scored 37 points while Rachitha Vithanage netted 16 for Maharagama. For NYSC meanwhile Ifthaz Nazir top scored with 26 points while Mithilan Rajendran excelled for the losers scoring 22 points.

In another "B" division semi-final Moratuwa BC beat C.I.S by 60 points to 59 in a nail biting finish. For Moratuwa Menaka Viraj (18 points), Ruzni Hameed (8) and M. Y. M. Nishan 23 points played best. Shehan Jayawardena (16), Dane Henricus (22) and A. Perera (7) did well for Colombo International Schools.
