Triple crown for Ruhansi

Ruhansi Wijekoon of Maliyadeva Balika MV Kurunegala won a triple crown including the women's singles title while Isuru Jayawardena of Maliyadeva College Kurunegala won the men's open singles title at the North Western Province table tennis tournament worked off at the Municipal Council indoor games stadium in Kurunegala.

Ruhansi Wijekoon clinched the women's singles by overcoming her schoolmate Kumarini Basnayake 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4 in the final encounter. Earlier she won the girls under 17 title and the girls under 15 title to complete a highly successful tournament. In the under 17 final too she had the better of her schoolmate Kumarini Basnayake 11-3, 11-5, 11-8 and in the under 15 final she defeated her teammate Lakshani Rajapaksa 11-6, 11-6, 11-6.

Ruhansi Wijekoon was later named as the most outstanding player in the women's tournament and received her awards from the chief guest Daya Samaraweera former president of the North Western Province Table Tennis Association and Superintendent of Police - Trincomalee. Isuru Jayawardena of Maliyadeva College took the men's singles title with a 11-8, 11-8, 11-6 win over his schoolmate Luvi Samarakoon in the final. Isuru Jayawardena went on to complete a double winning the men's doubles title along with partner Amila Ariyawansa.

This pair had the better of Nuwan Jayasundera and Nandana Jayasuriya 11-8, 11-8, 13-11 in the final. However Luvi Samarakoon of Maliyadeva College was picked as the most outstanding player in the men's tournament for winning the boys under 17 singles and the boys under 19 singles respectively.

In the under 17 final Samarakoon defeated his teammate Nuwan Ekanayake 9-11, 11-4, 14-12, 11-5 and in the under 19 singles final he beat the same opponent 8-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-4. Kumarini Basnayake of Maliyadeva BMV had the satisfaction of winning the girls under 19 singles title overcoming her teammate Lakshani Rajapaksa 11-9, 7-11, 11-4, 3-11, 11-5. Lakshani Rajapaksa and Tarindra Weerakoon won the women's doubles title overcoming Chanika Wijekoon and Ruhansi Wijekoon 11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9 in the final.

In the mixed doubles final Nuwan Ekanayake and Dinali Galagedera outplayed the combination of Isuru Jayawardena and Ruhansi Wijekoon 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7. In the junior events Dewram Chaturanga of Maliyadeva College won two titles the boys under 9 singles and the boys under 13 singles title respectively. In the under 9 final he beat his teammate Supun Tharuka 11-9, 11-2, 12-10 and in the under 13 final he had the better of his schoolmate Nuwan Jayasundera 0-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.

In the boys under 7 singles final Akila Padeniya of Maliyadeva College defeated his teammate Yadun Chameera 11-3, 11-7, 11-0 and in the boys under 11 final Kusal Bhanuka of Maliyadeva College beat his teammate J. M. N. N. Jayasundera 12-14, 11-7, 11-8, 11-4. Venuri Jayaratne of Maliyadeva BMV bagged the girls under 7 singles title with a 6-11, 12-10, 11-3, 11-4 win over Waruni Ekanayake of Sir John Kotelawala MV Kurunegala.

In the girls under 9 final Sinduja Wickremasinghe of Maliyadeva BMV had the better of her schoolmate Gayathri Senanayake 14-12, 11-8, 9-11, 11-2. Tarindra Weerakoon of Maliyadeva BMV won the girls under 11 singles title overcoming Sinduja Wickremasinghe 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 while Yuganthi Wijekoon also from Maliyadeva BMV annexed the girls under 13 singles title overcoming Tharindra Weerakoon 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4.
