Sampath Bank - 15 years of pioneering Networked ATMs in Lanka

Sampath Bank, a leading banking institution in Sri Lanka celebrated fifteen years of pioneering multi point Networked Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in Sri Lanka recently. This celebration heralds a new era for the banking industry in the country, with Sampath Bank as the forerunner to introduce technologically advanced innovative products and services to its customers. Benedict Ulluvishewa, the first Sampath Bank 'SET' cardholder in the country was presented a plaque to mark the occasion.

Sampath Bank was the first bank to operate a multi point network of Automated Teller Machines in Sri Lanka. This initiative also introduced the concept of 24-hour electronic banking in the country. Sampath Bank thereafter added layers of value to its ATM Card - the 'SET' card. First they made it double as a Debit Card with 'Cirrus/Maestro' facility. This enabled the cardholder to use it for banking transactions not only on their extensive 'SET' network in the country but also globally on over 890,000 Cirrus ATMs. It could also be used to pay for purchases at over five million Maestro Point of Sale (POS) terminals at a wide range of merchant sites locally and abroad.

In Sri Lanka, the 'SET' card can be used at over 330 ATMs and to pay for purchases at over 1,000 Maestro POS terminals at various merchant sites including petrol stations, supermarkets, grocery stores and other merchant sites depicting the Maestro sign.

They have added another layer of value by providing the "Easy Cash' facility. A 'SET' cardholder paying for a purchase of over Rs. 250 from any merchant depicting the "Easy Cash' sign may draw up to Rs. 5,000 in cash from his/her account. This facility is already available at selected supermarkets (including Food City and Sathosa) and many other merchant sites. Easy Cash facility is the instant method to obtain cash without running to a bank or an ATM. Today these services are used by over 500,000 'SET' card holders islandwide. ATM services are available to Sampath Bank customers having Current/Savings Accounts and Credit Cards across all their branches plus off-site locations such as the Liberty Plaza Shopping Mall in Colombo, SSC Service Station, Nawala, Bandaranaike International Airport, Unilever Ceylon Limited premises and SLIIT premises on the Malabe, Kaduwela Road.
