Students must have a positive outlook in life - Rienzie Wijetilleke

In order to further encourage Managers of Student Savings Units of the Hatton National Bank (HNB) branches in schools, a Student Savings Unit Managers Conference was held at the HNB Auditorium for Colombo Regional Schools. Over 500 student managers from 50 leading schools in the Colombo region participated with the teachers in-charge.

The objectives of this conference are to build the savings habits among the students for their future benefit of developing banking knowledge among students, identifying schoolchildren as potential customers of the bank and participating in school development activities along with the students and the teachers of the schools.

The chief guest Rienzie T. Wijetilleke said that certificates don't mean everything and added that he strongly believed that knowledge, experience and skills should go together.

He told the gathering that he often sees very good certificates such as MBA and Attorneys but many of them lack skills. "Skill is a must - many go ahead of others, without certificates using their skills. This is the time to develop this skill." He said that to ensure the future of the country, value addition was of paramount importance. Despite many challenges ahead, he said that this student gathering is a privileged lot since there were so many opportunities or career advancement in Colombo. He recalled upon the students in Colombo to make sure that they shared these privileges with others in the society. He also said that the student managers conference was a continuation program conducted by the Hatton Nationl Bank to bring the younger generation of Sri Lanka into the threshold of the country's activities particularly the financial sector.

For the last several years we have been using a quite lot of our own resources, time, energy and staff to carry out this exercise.

He also said, "Today we have leaders in the world but only very few people were a good example. Speaking on the topic vision, he said that vision was something that had been for centuries in one's mind. Vision is something you must dream when you are alive and awake, not when you are sleeping.

Former Sri Lankan Cricket Captain Arjuna Ranatunga who was the guest speaker at this conference said that teamwork was leadership. Ranatunga strongly believes that a team must not be bothered about big or small and be prepared to listen to everybody.

Speaking on the topic, "Students need to lead" by, Deputy General Manager, Personal Banking of HNB, Chandula Abeywickrema said that main focus of the Students Branch Managers Colombo Conference was to give an insight on what's happening in the global business world and advised the student managers to build communication skills to update their knowledge according to the present trends in global technology development to reach top positions in life.

A special incentive scheme was introduced for Student Managers to encourage students in the respective schools to save more. All student managers and teachers who participated in the conference were presented with a gift token of appreciation for the dedicated service rendered to their school unit.
