STC to import raw materials for SME sector

STC General Trading Ltd. is planning to import raw materials for the small and medium industries at a reasonable price to support the small and medium enterprise sector.

This measure was taken following a directive issued by Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake that small and medium entrepreneurs should also be provided with the necessary assistance.

One of the main grievances in the SME sector is the scarcity of raw materials as there is no dedicated supplier for them which compelled them to pay exorbitant prices for the middlemen or to depend on scraps waste materials from big manufactures. STC Chairman Yasendra De Silva said that under the scheme, the small and medium industrialist will get the opportunity to purchase even smaller quantities of raw materials at a reasonable price.

The company has achieved a turnover of Rs. 11,435,103 in August, of which Rs. 8,774,436 is from generic drugs and the balance Rs. 2,660,667 from parallel imports.

The Authority has declared five items, cement, liquid petroleum gas, milk powder, mosquito coils and boxes of matches as specified goods under Section 18 (1) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 09 of 2003.

The specification prohibits a manufacturer or a trader to increase prices without prior approval of the Authority.
