Lanka's tea crop this year to outdo 2002 - SLTB Chairman

Sri Lanka's national tea production in 2003 should report an increase of 3 to 5 percent over the record crop of 310 million kilos in 2002, Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairman George Pelpola told the Daily News yesterday.

It is true that there have been adverse weather conditions in May and June this year which could have a detrimental effect on the final output for 2003 but the continuation of the 9 percent increase for July 2003 over the corresponding period last year, should augur well for the industry which will be instrumental in reporting a 3- 5 percent increase for this year.

He said that the marketing plans for 2003 also included the promotion of value added teas overseas which will help Sri Lanka to remain as the number one tea producing and export country. My sole aim is to ensure that Sri Lanka enjoys its present position in prices as well, he said. He outlined a plan to promote teas in the local market such as opening a Tea Board Centre at popular public venues such as super-markets, the Royal Botanical Gardens etc.

Pelpola, who started his career at Unilever (Ceylon) Ltd was there for 22 years, prior to his appointment as Sri Lanka's envoy to Rome and Male. He was also a UNP National List Member of Parliament for the Kandy District.

He was also Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), which was instrumental in Sri Lanka regaining her seat at the FAO after 28 years.

He also served on the Governing Body of the World Food Program and was on the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Agricultural Research and Development (IFAD). He returned to Sri Lanka's private sector in 1989 and served as General Manager of St. Anthony's Consolidated Ltd.
