One dead, 12 injured in Kashmir highway blast

KASHMIR, Tuesday (AFP) A civilian was killed and 12 others injured, including five soldiers, when separatist Muslim militants attacked an army convoy on restive Kashmir's main highway Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place at Chursoo, 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of the summer capital Srinagar.

Police said militants triggered an explosion and followed it by gunfire when the convoy passed by on its way to Jammu.

"Initial reports coming from the area suggest that five soldiers and eight civilians were injured critically," a police spokesman said, adding they have been taken to hospital. One of the civilians died on way to hospital, the spokesman said.

He said the area has been sealed off by the army and a mnahuunt launched.

Kashmir's dominant rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin claimed responsibility for the attack, the third on the main highway since Monday.
