International marathon at Dambulla Lanka Sportreizen in its efforts to promote tourism through sports inaugurated the LSR International Marathon in 1998. The first marathon was held in the world heritage site in Galle which was a great success and prompted by this success it was decided to make this an annual event. The second marathon was held in Negombo in 1999 but unfortunately the marathon could not be held in the year 2000 due to various disturbances prevalent at the time. However when the atmosphere improved for the better the 3rd and 4th marathons were held in Kandy very successfully. Promotion of tourism through sports being the main objective, we decided to move the venue to other sites of tourist interests. This year it was decided to hold this marathon in Dambulla on the suggestion of Chief Minister of Central Provincial Council, Wasantha Aluvihare in an endeavour to develop these remote areas. Dambulla attracts a large number of tourists annually and need no introduction. We have identified a route that runs through remote villages, paddy fields and reservoirs in this area which would be of interest to the foreign participants. This year teams from Japan, Singapore, United Kingdom and Kenya have already confirmed participation and the local participation is expected to exceed more than 500. In its organisational efforts Lanka Sportreizen is assisted by the Ministry of Central Region Development, the Central Provincial Council, Sri Lanka Tourist Board, Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka and the Cultural Triangle Hoteliers Association. Lanka Sportreizen is confident that its efforts to promote tourism through sports will benefit, the region, hoteliers, other travel related organisations and will also boost the image of Sri Lanka as a Destination for Sports and Recreation. |
