The UNF Government has decided to solve all the burning problems of the pensioners, which have been stagnating for years. So there is no necessity for them to hold protest meetings and conduct demonstration today, said Jayantha Ketagoda, Colombo District MP and Avissawella UNP Organiser at the 29th Annual General meeting of the National Federation of Pensioners' Association of Sri Lanka, held at the Avissawella Town Hall.

He said that the Government was prepared to provide all the privileges due to pensioners. They are the partners of the development process of the country. The Government has a bounden duty to look after the pensioners who have contributed much of their life time for the building of the country's economy.

Victor Samaraweera, Director of Pensions said that the salary anomalies of pensioners will be resolved before the end of December 2003. Vajira Abeywardana, Minister of Public Administration, Management and Reforms has already submitted the commission report to the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and the other Ministers.

He said that the pensioners were the senior citizens of the country who had contributed their long experience for the development of the country and building of the economy. He said that Minister Vajira Abeywardena has a soft corner for pensioners and he hoped to start several welfare projects for the benefit of pensioners.

Prof. T.B. Wanninayaka of the Wayamba University and consultant to Minister Abeywardana said that he was happy to address this meeting on the direction of the Minister Abeywardana. He said that the Minister had taken steps to solve the salary anomalies of pensioners before end of this year.

The Ven. Mahopadya Werahera Ariyawansa Adhikarana, Sangha Nayaka, Director, Piriven Teacher Training Institute, Avissawella said that the pensioners were the people who loved the country and the nation. It is our duty to make their lives happy and allow them to breathe a sigh of relief. Vidana Patirana, Secretary of the Association said that today the pensioners have come forward as a powerful force. The problem of salary anomalies have brought closer to the winning post.

Ven. Panane Saddhatissa Thera, M. Mervin Perera, President K.S. Karunaratna and several others spoke.
