Rs. 3m allocated for road reconstruction in each electorate - Minister Marapana

The execution of "Road Week Programmes" will be commenced in the coming days, accordingly", said Thilak Marapana, Minister of Defence, Transportation, Highway and Civil Aviation at the end of the "Road Week Programme" held recently in Beruwela.

"The Government has decided to spend an additional Rs. 15 million on electorate basis in order to expedite the development programmes implemented thus strengthening the regional development of the country in the future. The Government intends to give priority for electricity and water schemes and highway development projects utilising these funds effectively.

"As per the foregoing development programme, the Government has made arrangements under the direction of Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe to spend Rs. 3 million for the reconstruction of roads in every electorate.

The execution of "Road Week Programmes" will be commenced in the coming days, accordingly", said Thilak Marapana, Minister of Defence, Transportation, Highway and Civil Aviation at the end of the "Road Week Programme" held recently in Beruwela. The closing ceremony of this "Road Week" was held to mark the completion of repairs of 27 roads in the Beruwela urban territory costing nearly Rs. 1.03 billion during a short period about two weeks.

Minister Marapana who participated at this event on the invitation of Mass Communication Minister Imthiasz Bakeer Markar said that if a country is to realise the full potential of its development projects, it is paramount that its highways and road network is properly maintained. We should get the maximum benefit from our road network if we put all the available resources at hand to good use.

Minister Marapana said that the government had to face various obstacles in the past 18 months, but, with proper guidance and sound financial management, our country is on a more sound financial footing now. This has helped us begin many development projects which will bring many benefits to the people.

He said that the Government is laying special emphasis on village and regional level development activities, while launching other national development programmes. Rs. 15 million has been allocated at electoral level for this purpose. Hence, the public will be provided with electricity, water and transport facilities. Rs. 3 million will be allocated for the reconstruction of roads in each electorate.

Mass Communication Minister Imthiasz Bakeer Markar said that twenty seven roads in the Beruwela town which had not been repaired for 20 years were repaired at a cost of Rs. 1.03 billion under the road development week. Fifty kilometres of road were repaired with the help of the Road Development Authority.

"With the roaring success of this programme, we plan to introduce this scheme throughout the entire Beruwela electorate, he said. Mayor of Beruwela Mazahim Mohammed and WPC members A. M. Yusoof and Jayantha Abeygoonawardana were also present.
