Father, son and daughter of the same family enter the Buddhist order

by Kegalle special correspondent

A rare case where a father, a son and a daughter of the same family have renounced the household life and ordained as Buddhist monks and a nun (Bhikkuni) is reported from Menikdewela in the Rambukkana area.

The father, E. G. Herath Banda, a well established and a popular businessman of 44 years, his son Rohan Bandara (18) and daughter Nilmini Herath (15) donned the robes of Buddhist order recently at Ganemulla Sri Subhaddrarama Viharaya in Mawanella.

They were ordained under the tutelage of Ven. Panditha Kapuliyadde Rathanawimala Thera of Ganetenna Sri Subhaddrarama Viharaya in the Mawanella area.

Herath Banda (father) became a recluse under the name of Ven. Asweddume Chandaratana Thera while the son Rohan Bandara, as Ven. Asweddume Vimukthiratana Thera.

The daughter became a nun (a Theri) under the guidance of Bhikkuni Ulpathgama Sunethra Theri, the Viharadhipathini of Menikdiwela Jinendraramaya. The nun was named Asweddume Suchintha Theri. E. G. Herath Banda (his name as a layman) has his wife and another son and a daughter. They too are expected to be ordained towards the end of this year and soon the whole family of six will be spending the rest of their lives in the service of Buddha Sasana, Ven. Asweddume Chandrarathana Thera disclosed to the "Daily News".

Whole family was in the habit of following a meditation course under Ven. Tripitakacharya Waturugama Nandasiri Thera and in the course of their meditation they have realised the impermanence of all wordy pleasures, attachments and desires. Therefore all of them together have resolved to be ordained as "Bhikkhus" and "Bhikkhunis" (monks and nuns) to serve the Buddha Sasana.

Rohan Bandara (now Ven. Asweddume Vimukthirathne Thera) was a student of Vidyartha Maha Vidyalaya, Kandy and was studying in the Advance Level Class there. Nilmini Herath (now Asweddume Suchintha Theri) was a student of the GCE (Ordinary Level) class, it was disclosed.
