Volunteer workers can now enhance their activities in collaboration with government agencies to serve the people better in the rural sector, said Land Registration and Ownership Minister Lucky Jayawardena. Addressing a gathering of volunteer workers of his electorate at the D.B. Wijetunga Auditorium in Udunuwara last Sunday Minister Jayawardena commended the service rendered by volunteer workers in his electorate. "Politicians too do a great service to the people but they are paid for it. Volunteers do it free. So the entire society is indebted to them and others should follow in their footsteps and serve fellowmen, he said. Minister Jayawardena said that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's development plan will bring new projects to the village and volunteers can participate in such projects to pass on the benefits to the villagers when they are implemented soon in the periphery. He said he would not consider political differences when it comes to village development and asked people to join the government's effort to develop the economy and enjoy its benefits. "No matter whether governments are changed peoples' problems should be addressed by politicians whatever their party policies are. Volunteers have no political divisions so they can join any politician and work longer on projects to generate employment for the people in the area, he said. Minister Jayawardena said that the concept of village development which means development of the country should be adopted today as the economy of the villager has to be strengthened in the face of new global economic trends. Udunuwara AGA Ariyawansa, Kandurata Development Bank Chairman. B. Weerakoon, Central Provincial Council Chairman Sarath Sikurajapathi and several others participated. (LY) |
