SLBFE KIA branch earns Rs.12.9m income in August

by Ananda Kannangara

A marked income of Rs. 12.9 million has been earned by the Airport branch of Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) from registrations made by Sri Lankan expatriate workers during the month of August.

According to an on-the-spot examination made by the Bureau on Monday, the Air Port branch has earned approximately Rs. 129,45,420 during this period. "This has been an 80 per cent growth achieved by us in comparison to the income of Rs. 45,047,100.00 during the year of 2001 and

Rs. 69,843,280.00 obtained during the twelve month period from January to December last year," Chairman, SLBFE Susantha Fernando told the Daily News.

He also said that attractive salaries paid by many foreign companies and individual employers for our housemaids, factory workers and skilled and unskilled workers is the main contributory factor for this increase. "The changes made on the management structure of the Bureau Registration Counter at the Bandarnaike International Airport(BIA) by Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe in February this year have also resulted to achieve the current progress," he said.

Fernando also indicated that the departure of nearly 90,000 Lankan workers have been reported during the first eight months of this year and among them 82 per cent are housemaids who have found employment in the Middle East region.

The Bureau has also indicated that there is a 30 per cent improvement of professionals such as doctors, Engineers and Accountants seeking employment in foreign countries during this period. "Most of these professionals have secured jobs in England, Canada, Australia, America, Singapore and several Western countries," Fernando added.
