Commonwealth nations behind Lanka's peace bid - Deputy Speaker, Lok Sabha

The Indian Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker P.M. Sahied pledged the assistance of the Commonwealth Nations to Sri Lanka, in its struggle to achieve permanent peace.

Speaking to a group of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) members he said: "We wish and pray the efforts of Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe and his government towards the settlement of the country's two decade long conflict will be successful and your country will be able to arrive at an amicable settlement. We are all with you in every sense and our efforts also would be available."

Meanwhile, the Port, Shipping and Eastern Development Minister Rauff Hakeem speaking to the gathering said the country is at a very crucial juncture today in its path to establish peace to the war ravaged country, and the country is eagerly looking forward for the constitutional reform that will pave way for a permeant peace.

"We ourselves are in the middle of negotiations and all are eagerly looking forward for a constitutional reforms that will pave way for a lasting peace."

Referring to the proposed constitutional reforms he said that the country has a gigantic task to perform and it has many lessons to learn from the neighbours in the region.

He said that the CPA Asian Region conference where the regional constitutional Reforms, Parliamentary select Committee system and its reforms are to be discussed will prove to be beneficial to the Sri Lankan Parliamentarians.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Commonwealth Treasurer Prof. John Mary, Indian Deputy speaker, P.M. Sahied, Maldivian deputy speaker Abdul Rashied Hussain, Speaker Joseph Michael Perera, Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapakse and CPA representatives from South Asian countries were present at the occasion.
