Health unions call off strike

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) has called off their islandwide trade union action scheduled for today and tomorrow following a discussion with a member of the Cabinet Sub Committee.

The alliance's representatives had extensive discussions with the Minister of Lands Dr. Rajitha Senaratne who is a member of the Cabinet Sub Committee appointed to look into the health sector. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, having considered the opinions of the Ministers, last week appointed a six member Ministerial Committee headed by Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya to inquire in to the strikes in the Health sector. Ministers P.Dayaratne, Vajira Abeywardena, Gamini Lokuge, Rajitha Senaratne and John Amaratunga were appointed as other members of the Committee.

"Monday's discussion with Minister Senaratne was successful and we were able to arrive at a consensus," an Alliance spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

Accordingly, the Cabinet Sub Committee will provide a solution to the salary anomalies in the health sector within the next two weeks, the spokesman added. Therefore, the spokesman said, the HSTUA had decided to call off their islandwide sick leave campaign scheduled for today and tomorrow. The meeting had been attended by the representatives of 54 trade unions affiliated to the alliance.

The Cabinet Sub Committee is to hold a discussion with the Treasury on the proposals prepared by the Health Ministry Sub Committee aimed at resolving salary anomalies in the health sector.

A senior Ministry official said those proposals have now been sent to the Treasury for further consideration.

"The proposals seek to eliminate existing and future salary anomalies in the health sector and they have now been sent to the Treasury to obtain their views," official added. The Ministry's Sub Committee headed by Ministry's Additional Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilake comprises Director General Health Services Dr. Athula Kahandaliynage and two other senior Ministry officials.

The Official said that every category in the health sector will be entitled to a salary increase once these proposals are implemented.

"The proposals will also prevent future salary anomalies in the sector too."

The HSTUA comprises over 50 trade unions in the health sector and this includes Assistant Medical Officers, nurses, professions supplementary to medicine, technical staff and clerks. The HSTUA last week staged a one day islandwide sick note campaign affecting the normal services at Government hospitals.
