Dairy farming project for Kalutara

The Kalutara District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has finalised a proposal to develop the dairy farming industry in the Kalutara district thereby promoting self-employment among 5,000 Samurdhi beneficiaries and unemployed youth.

Dr. Yasantha Mapatune, Director, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Development of the Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority and Kamal Gamage, Director General of the Kalutara District Chamber of Commerce and Industry presented a copy of the report to S. B. Dissanayake, Minister of Agriculture Livestock and Samurdhi and Lands Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne at the opening of the Arunalu Rekiya Pola on Thursday at the Kalutara District Secretariat office auditorium.

The Kalutara District Chamber of Commerce and Industry will launch this Pilot Project on Production, Distribution and popularising of fresh cows milk among the public in the Kalutara district to promote the health of the people specially ill-nourished children of poor families.

The project will be implemented with the co-operation of the Livestock Division of the Samurdhi Authority. It has been decided to provide special benefits to Samurdhi beneficiaries in the Kalutara district.

The preliminary meeting at Panadura was presided over by Land Minister Dr. Senaratne.

He assured Amal Fernando, President of the Kalutara District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and its Director General Kamal Gamage that he (Minister) could provide lands in the Kalutara district to set up cattle sheds.

At the beginning six dairy units each containing 50 high bred dairy cows will be provided per unit. The expenditure on the setting up of dairy units for importation of cows and others (total capital cost) is provided by the Chamber of Commerce Kalutara and they will handle the management part of this project as well.

Sixty Samurdhi recipients 10 for each dairy unit will be selected according to a survey done among Samurdhi recipients in the Kalutara district. They will be considered shareholders of these dairy units.
