Govt to create 25,000 jobs in three months

The Government will create 25,000 job opportunities during the next three months through an ambitious program initiated with the support of the private sector. A large number of private sector companies has already extended their support towards this project.

The project will be implemented on a directive by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, following the recovery of the economy in the country. "The private sector has enjoyed the soundness of the economy and the prevailing peaceful conditions will further help it to grow and expand," highly placed Government sources told the Daily News yesterday.

Prime Minister Wickeremesinghe has already met a large number of CEOs and Senior Executives of private sector companies and had discussed the idea extensively.

Though the economy has grown significantly and the corporates have earned substantial financial results over the last 18 months, the majority of these companies have not expanded their operations to their full capacity.

"Therefore, the Government will persuade the private sector to generate 25,000 new employment opportunities as far as possible. This will also be an added impetus for the Government's efforts to further strengthen the private sector role in the 'Regaining Sri Lanka' program," the sources said.

As a first step, a selected group of Ministers will be given the task of implementing the project.

Accordingly, they (ministers) will have to work with business leaders and discuss the need for the rapid expansion of the private sector, thereby creating employment opportunities for graduates and other unemployed youth.

The Prime Minister has already informed some of the Ministers about this project, explaining the tasks given to each minister, the sources said.

Earlier the private sector leaders said that they would prepare a set of proposals on creating jobs in the private sector and it was due to be presented to the Prime Minister by the end of August. This follows a request by the Prime Minister in July.
