Treasury to re-investigate P'naruwa paddy purchases

The report forwarded to the Advisory Committee on Sustainable Development and Food Security, pertaining to the irregularities involving the purchasing of paddy by the Polonnaruwa Co-operative Societies was rejected by the Government last night.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered the Treasury to have a detailed investigation in a more methodical manner conducted by a team of Treasury officials, the Government Media Spokesman's Office announced last night.

Expat remittances up

Foriegn remittances sent by Lankan expatriates have recorded an increase of 12 per cent this year owing to the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

According to Central Bank statistics, the foriegn remittances earned by expatriate workers last year amounted to US $ 1,100 million but the figure is expected to reach US$ 1,200 million by the end of this year.

The Central Bank has also pointed out the stable and sound economic policies adopted by the Government and the tax relief measures granted to expatriates as the main causes of this major increase.

Help sought for child heart patient

Four month old H. D. Hiruni Chandima Gunasekera, daughter of Corporal H. D. Sumanasiri, Sri Lanka Light Infantry of the Sri Lanka Army is suffering from an acute cardiac complication from her birth and needs urgent surgery according to Dr. Aruna Kapuruge, Surgeon at Sri Jayawardhanapura General hospital.

The surgery costs Rs. 275,000 including hospital charges and other clinical requirements in total, of which the President's fund has already agreed to release a sum of Rs. 110,000. The Army Seva Vanitha Branch has donated Rs. 30,000. The balance cost Rs. 135,000 needs to be collected from donors since the father is unable to afford the expenditure.
