Two policemen interdicted for negligence of duty

by Sarath Malalasekera

The two Police personnel who were on duty on the night of August 28 at the Kadawatha Police Station, where a suspect in custody committed suicide in his cell, were interdicted for negligence of duty.

This was revealed by Western Province North DIG Pathmasiri Liyanage at a media conference held at the auditorium of the Department of Registration of Persons at Keppetipola Mawatha, Colombo yesterday morning.

Interior and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunge, Ministry Secretary M. N. Junaid, Commissioner of the Department for Registration of Persons Vijaya Ranasinghe, Controller of Immigration and Emigration Mervyn Wijesekera, former DIG Lal Ratnayake, Deputy Commissioners Ms. P. Abeysiriwardena and M. A. M. Nizar and several other officials of the Department of Registration of Persons were present at the conference.

DIG Liyanage said that the deceased suspect described as an army deserter was arrested by the Kadawatha Police Mobile Unit while patrolling the area on the night of August 28.

The suspect had pleaded with the officer in charge on that night not to lock him up in the cell.

But according to the Police regulations once a suspect is brought to the police station he had to be kept in the cell until he was produced in court, said DIG Liyanage.

The suspect had used his belt to hang himself inside the cell. Police negligence had caused this death, therefore the two persons who were on duty on that day had to be interdicted immediately. An inquiry will be held in this connection, the DIG said.

DIG Liyanage referring to the incident at the Kandana junction said that 17 suspects who are alleged to have been involved in the incident including the person who stabbed Wanigasuriya had been arrested and were to be produced before a Magistrate until the completion of the investigations.
