by Rashomi Silva Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged its assistance for the implementation of 630 Rural Electrification Schemes (RES), the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced yesterday. Speaking to the Daily News a senior CEB official said: "We have finalised all arrangements to get financial assistance from the ADB. The RES will cost over Rs. 5200 million and over 150,000 households islandwide will benefit," he said. He said that the CEB expects to kick off the project during the latter part of this year and discussions are under way with several other lending organisations and governments to obtain similar assistance to extend the RES project. According to the CEB, the Chinese government has pledged their assistance for the implementation of 500 more RES and over 70,000 households are expected to benefit. The project which is estimated to cost Rs. 2700 million will be implemented in seven provinces, including Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western. "At present the electrification level is between 62-63 per cent" he said. Meanwhile Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya said that the government does not consider electricity as a privilege but as a basic need for the human life and their aim is to provide electricity to everyone during their tenure. |
