More carriages for peak hour trains

by Rajmi Manatunga

The Railways Authority has initiated a programme to add new carriages to trains with a view to reduce over-crowding and ensure a comfortable ride for commuters. Accordingly, new compartments will be attached to long distance trains during peak hours.

Authority Chairman P.H Manatunga told the Daily News that under the first phase of the project, additional carriages have already been attached to six peak hour trains including the Colombo-Aluthgama, Colombo-Chilaw, Colombo-Puttalam trains.

"Each of these trains with the capacity to carry over 400 passengers has been given one additional carriage. We hope this will reduce to some extent the present congestion in our trains, especially those operating on office hours," he said.

Plans are also underway to improve conditions inside rail carriages that have been subject to vandalism over the years. Accordingly, the Authority expects to fix fans and enhance the lighting system within the compartments.

"We have taken several steps to strengthen the rail tracks. Attention has also been drawn towards a re-arrangement of railway time tables in a way that truly benefits commuters," the Chairman added.
