New concrete strengthening system introduced to Lanka

A new composite building strengthening system was introduced recently to Sri Lanka's building industry by Finco Limited, in association with a top international construction chemical manufacturing company.

The new system known as FRP - MBraceTM (Fibre Reinforced Polymer), is an advanced technique for structural strengthening which increases load bearing capacity of beams, columns and walls and has resistance against corrosion, crack propagation and bomb blasts.

FRP - MBraceTM is manufactured using glass or carbon fibre and comes in a sheet system or bar system, which can be used to strengthen buildings, bridges-beams, piers and deck slabs, silos, chimneys, tanks, pipes and tunnels, marine structures, jetties and wharves.

Unlike traditional strengthening techniques, which are space consuming and require special skills to install, FRP - MBraceTM is easy to install, non-destructive, requires low labour, does not require heavy and special equipment, can be used in small-constricted spaces and is flexible to be able to adapt to various shapes said.

Richard Tan, Business Manager - Business Systems of MBT (Master Builders Technologies) Singapore, which is represented in Sri Lanka by Finco Limited. He was addressing a seminar organised by Finco.

Tan pointed out that FRP - MBraceTM, one of the latest developments in the building industry, could even prevent a building from collapsing or buckling under impact. "This product is put through extensive testing at Research and Development Laboratories the world over. Customers are assured of a high quality product," he said. Tan also briefed participants on concrete repair and the best protective coating to be used for concrete repair as well as on grout.

William Neo, Products Manager, Building Systems, MBT Singapore spoke on the subject of waterproofing and sealant and explained the main causes of waterproofing systems failures, how to ensure an effective waterproofing system as well as what should be considered when selecting waterproofing systems.

"The incidence of waterproofing failure is on the increase," Neo said. "Poor workmanship and poor coordination between main contractor and waterproofing applicator as well as questionable quality of waterproofing material are some of the causes of water leakage or premature waterproofing systems failure."

The seminar was attended by architects, engineers, contractors and others involved in the construction industry.

MBT is the construction and environment division of Degussa GmbH, Germany and is an active supplier of specialty chemicals to the construction industry worldwide.

The company has many affiliate companies in most countries of South East Asia and has built an enviable reputation as the region's leading supplier of quality construction chemicals.

Finco Limited is the management arm of the Finco Group and is engaged in real estate development and agency representation work of several international organizations.

Finco has been associated with MBT Singapore for the past 20 years. The other companies in the Finco Group are International Construction Consortium (ICC) Ltd., Alpha Industries Limited, Alpha Tours Limited, Ianburke Limited Hong Kong, Orient Garments Limited, Orient Lanka Trading (Pvt) Ltd., Genesiis Software (Pvt) Ltd., Nivasie Developers (Pvt) Ltd and the Saman Foundation.
