'Yuga Dekma'- 2003 to boost development in Matara

By Channa Kasturisinghe

'Yuga Dekma' - 2003, the second mega industrial exhibition organised by the Ministry of Industries would lay the foundation for making Matara the country's `centre of development in the millennium', Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said.

He said the first 'Yuga Dekma' in Trincomalee, depicting the emerging development in the North and East as a result of the peace process was a tremendous success and this year's event to be held in Matara from September 5 to 11 has been organised on an even grander scale.

The special feature of `Yuga Dekma - 2003' is the state-of-the-art-pavilions accommodating 600 stalls. "The fully covered and semi covered pavilions are similar to those at international exhibitions in Europe and other developed countries. While accommodating a large number of stalls the pavilions provide all the facilities to industrialists and enable the participants to enjoy the exhibition more conveniently," Minister Bogollagama said.

He said over 1.2 million participants are expected at this exhibition and the Ministry has arranged transport facilities and accommodation for them.

"While benefiting the industrialists and educating the public there are several events for the entertainment of the participants. During the day we have arranged to special programs for fisheries, industrial sectors and school children and will be followed by musical and cultural events at night," the Minister said.

He said the IT giant from Bangalore Narayan Murthi will also participate in the exhibition.

"Our aim is to make Matara the centre for IT development in the country. The Ministry is also planning to felicitate five innovative entrepreneurs who hailed from Matara. On September 7 we will open the new Nippolac Factory in Matara.

It provides about 200 employment opportunities for people in the area," Bogollagama said. The Minister said that Yuga Dekma is more than an industrial exhibition but a national event that facilitate the economic, social and political interaction of people in the country.

"Yuga Dekma has been able to introduce a new era to the masses where knowledge, skills and expertise are widespread and easily accessible. Local participants will be able to interact with trade chambers, foreign business representatives and potential investors and gain a macro perspective of Sri Lanka's industry," Minister Bogollagama said.
