India kills two Muslim rebels in capital

NEW DELHI, Sunday (Reuters) Police in the Indian capital said on Sunday they had killed two Muslim militants from an outlawed Pakistan-based Kashmiri rebel group in a gun battle and foiled a plan to launch a terror attack.

The gun battle was the latest in a series of violent incidents that have hit India in recent weeks and threaten to hurt a renewed bid for peace between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Muslim Pakistan.

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said last week peace talks with Pakistan could not be held until there was an end to rebel violence, which India blames on Pakistan-based Kashmiri separatists.

The shootout in New Delhi took place just before midnight (1830 GMT) on Saturday near a park in the city centre, a police spokesman said. The two men, belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammad group, were waiting to pick up a consignment of arms and opened fire when police approached them, he said.

Police had learnt about the two men after they intercepted a fruit truck carrying hand grenades, shells and a grenade launcher, and arrested three men earlier in the evening, the spokesman said.

"These three men were supposed to deliver the consignment to the two militants," he said, adding that an AK-56 rifle, bullets and two loaded pistols were recovered from the dead men.

Earlier on Saturday, Delhi police found a bag containing about 21 kg (46 lb) of gelatin explosives on a platform at the city's crowded main railway station.
