Colombo Super League 2003: 

Sampath Bank, Wattala and Colombo BC record wins

Sampath Bank continued to impress in the Colombo Super league 2003 basketball tournament when they convincingly beat Moratuwa BC by 17 points in a "A" Division match at the Depot Police courts, Bambalapitiya on Tuesday. The victory ensured the bankers of a semi-final berth in the tournament. The final score was 64-47. Sampath have already beaten Colombo Bulls in the curtain raiser of the tournament.

The Moratuwa players struggled against some right defending by the bankers and lost possession of the ball on many occasions. For the winners, Heshan Premachandra top scored with 17 points, while Rasika Prabath made 12. Chameera Ratnayake scored 16. For the losers, Chaminda de Alwis scored 18, while Gayan Meedeniya scored eight.

Meanwhile Colombo BC playing their first game of the tournament on Monday thrashed David Pieris by a massive margin of 46 points. The Colombo side lead 40-25 at the short whistle and went onto win the game 85-39. For Colombo Gayan Samaraweera top scored with 25 points while Thushal Karunarathna and Sampath Kirige made 12 points each. For the losers, Laksiri Silva made 15 while Nalaka Kumarasinghe scored 10.

In another "A" Division match on Monday, Air Force suffered their second defeat in the tournament when Wattala beat them by two points in a nail biting encounter. In the closely contested tussle, Wattala lead by five points at the end of the first half, but the Airmen fought back and stole the lead in the second. Although Wattala were still trailing by a point with less than a minute to go, a three pointer with just a few seconds left ensured victory for them. For the winners, Maxwell Saranapala top scored with 18 points while. P. Pushpakumara and Thilina Jayarathna scored 11 points each. For the Airmen, Asanga Perera made 20 while Ravi Dodangoda scored 16. In a women's "B" Division match, Maharagama BC beat Colombo University convincingly by 22 points. The Maharagama side lead 51-09 in the first half and went on to win the game 74-52. For the winning team Shalika Gomes scored 21, while L.G. Vinudha scored 18 and Lochani Almeida chipped in with 14. For Colombo University Rosi Valangemberg scored 20 points, while Dharhani Munasinghe scored nine.

The "A" division matches of the girls' section got under way on Monday when Josephians BC hosted Air Force at St. Joseph's Girls School, Nugegoda. The hosts won the game by 19 points beating Air Force 58-39. For the winners, Prasadini Wijesinghe scored 15 while Amaya Kalpani scored 10. Jayaliya Kumari was the third highest scorer with nine points. For Air Force, Nilmini Fernando scored 14 while Malintha Amarasinghe made 13. Suleka Dissanayake scored eight.

In a "B" Division match at the Depot police Courts on Monday, The Colombo Lions beat Nugegoda Cagers by 28 points. The winners lead 46-22 at the end of the first half.

For the Lions, Suranga Perera, Dihal Peiris and Rohana Ward made most of the scoring while Sivashakthi Selvaraja scored 15 points for the losers. In another "B" Division match, Colombo International School beat NYSC by seven points. The final score was 78-71. The game was played at Amal International.
