Under 23 cricket: Trail blazing 234 by Wijeratne

Sahan Wijeratne hit a trail blazing 234 runs as Chilaw Marians SC outplayed Bloomfield on the first innings in their BCCSL under 23 division one cricket tournament semifinal match played at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

Wijeratne batted for a marathoon 541 minutes facing 409 balls and stroking 21 fours. He was also associated in a sixth wicket stand of 298 runs with Charith Sylvester who hammered 146 runs with the help of 15 fours.

Earlier Sahan added 212 runs for the fourth wicket with Janaka Gunaratne who also reached the three figure mark with 23 fours. Chilaw Marians SC really proved their batting depth with the last pair of Umesh Wijesiriwardena and Dhammika Niroshan putting on 101 runs.

SSC cruised to a nine wicket win over Colts CC in their BCCSL under 23 division one cricket tournament semifinal match played at Braybrooke Place yesterday.

Kelaniya CC defeated Unawatuna Beach Resort SC outright by 43 runs in their BCCSL under 23 division two cricket tournament semifinal match played at the BRC grounds yesterday.

Kelaniya CC: 292 (M. Ikram 31, S. Dlantha 84, C. Kulasinghe 44, M. Kumara 45, C. Atukorale 3 for 73, W. Ravindra 2 for 70) and 211 (C. Kulasinghe 62, M. Ikram 50, P. Harshaka 35, S. Ratnayake 4 for 57)

Franklin warms up for senior tennis nationals

Fifteen year old Franklin Emmanuel of Royal College warmed up for today's senior national championships by winning the boys under 18 singles title at the junior national tennis championships concluded at the NTC courts in Green Path yesterday.

Emmanuel who is ranked number one in the men's singles at the senior nationals put up a pleasing performance to beat T. Vidanarachchi in a three setter 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in the final. In the boys under 16 singles final Y. Jayasekera had the better of D. Wijesuriya also in a three setter 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile Thavindra Ekanayake clinched the girls under 14 singles title with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over A. Arulprakasam in the final. J. Jayawickrema took the girls under 12 singles title overcoming N. Gunasekera 6-2, 6-0 in the final. D. Tananjaya won the boys under 12 singles title defeating I. Wettasinghe 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

In the boys under 14 doubles final Cooray and Rajaratnam defeated the pair of R. Kumara and Thalagala 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the girls under 14 doubles final Arulprakasam and Dananjaya defeated Alahakoon and Jayawickrema 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Old Antonians take Saints Quadrangular

Old Antonians clinched the Saints Quadrangular title when they beat the defending champions Old Peterites by four wickets in their second annual cricket tournament final played at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

In the semifinals Old Peterites defeated Old Benedictines while Old Antonians had the better of Old Josephians.

Old Peterites: 188 for 8 in 25 overs (Amal Silva 66, Angelo Wickremaratne 37, Bernarad Wijethunga 30, Bernard Perera 3 for 29, Mohamed Zarook 2 for 32)

Old Antonians: 189 for 6 in 23.4 overs (Gamini Debahapuwa 66, M. Ratnakumara 46, P. Fernando 32, P. de Silva 23 n.o, Keerthi Gunaratne 4 for 29).
