Woeful Lanka suffer fourth straight defeat by Sa'adi Thawfeeq Sri Lanka under 19 cricketers gave another woeful display of batting to suffer their fourth straight defeat in the five-match one-day limited over series against the touring Pakistan under 19 team at the Sara Stadium yesterday. Put into bat first for the fourth time in as many matches, Sri Lanka under 19 were shot out for 183 off 49.1 overs and Pakistan chasing a revised winning target under the Duckworth and Lewis system won easily by six wickets with more than five overs to spare. A short sharp shower when Pakistan were cruising to victory at 159-4 in the 40th over saw their winning target being revised to 162 off 45 overs. On resumption they had to make just three runs to clinch victory which they did using up two balls. Once again Pakistan showed the depth in their batting, when they recovered from losing four wickets for 77 in 24 overs to top the required total. Jehangir Mirza with a stroke-filled unbeaten 89 off 97 balls (10 fours, 2 sixes) and Salman Qadir (42 not out off 52 balls) steered their side to victory with an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 88 off 102 balls. Right throughout the series the Pakistan batting has shown resoluteness which has been sadly lacking in their Sri Lankan counterparts. Each of Pakistan's four wins have been carved out by match-winning knocks from their batsmen. It was Shahid Yousaf's unbeaten 136 off 144 balls in the first one-dayer at Moratuwa, Nasir Jamshed's unbeaten 48 off 45 balls in the second at Matara, and skipper Khalid Latif (94 n.o.) and Mirza (73 n.o.) who shaped Pakistan's third win at Matara with an unfinished second wicket stand of 178. All what Sri Lanka has to offer in terms of comparison is a highest score of 48 not out by Ganganath Ratnayake in the first one-dayer at Moratuwa. The fact that no Sri Lankan batsmen have been able to make a single score of over fifty in the series tells the story for their failure to produce a win. Only once have they crossed the 200-run mark (at Moratuwa) and on that occasion they nearly came to pulling off a win. The other disappointing aspect of their batting has been their failure to bat out the allotted fifty overs in any of the four matches. The fifth and final match of the series takes place at the same venue tomorrow. SRI LANKA UNDER 19 W.U. Tharanga lbw b Afridi 4 A.D.C. Kularatne c Naeem b Afridi 9 H.E. Vitharana b Afridi 15 J.K.
