Young Learners of British Council presents :

Mummy's Boy and Half a Chick

The Young Learner's Centre of the British Council celebrates their fourth anniversary and presents two one act plays 'Half a Chick' and 'Mummy's Boy' directed by Odile Melder and assisted by Rashmi Fernando.

Half a Chick, retold by Bill Stockdale from a Spanish folk tale, captures the spirit of a very young cast of over 20 members to animate the legend in song, dance and drama. The production builds on the energy and enthusiasm of the children in a sequence of scenes designed to illustrate the importance of doing to others as you would have them do unto yourself.

Mummy’s Boy

Mummy's Boy is a delightful and hilarious story that reveals some unpredictable consequences of family and community interaction. In this play older members of the centre combine their talent and discipline in acting out scenes from this adaptation of Mummy's Boy.

The children have created the stage and costume design themselves. Both productions have afforded the children a wonderful opportunity to express themselves, harness their talents, and focus their energy into a unique theatrical experience. Music for the play spans a range of genres, including Indian soundscapes, classical pieces, folk songs from the 1960s, and other well known songs from The Beatles, songwriter Billy Joel and others.

Half a Chick

The combined efforts of this diverse and creative cast give life to these comedies and are bound to leave the audience laughing.

Half a Chick and Mummy's Boy will be performed on Sunday September 7th at 6.30 p.m. in the British Council main hall.

Tickets are now available at the Information Desk (Library) of the British Council (open from Tuesday.

The Ancestral Dress

An exhibition of Art Works by Pala Pothupitiya and photographs by Menika van der Poorten will take place at the Phenomenal Space Gallery, 35, Galle Face Court One, Galle Road, Colombo 3 from September 4 to 23.

Combining the classical 'Fine Art' form of Sculpture with the costume and adornment making tradition of Low Country Dance - conventionally considered 'Craft' and not Art-Pala Pothupitiya creates totally unconventional and unique works of Art.

With his roots dug firmly in the Low Country Dance and Costume making tradition of his forefathers in Deniyaya Pala (a sculpture graduate from the Institute of Aesthetic Studies) explores his heritage and identity through the medium of relief sculptures, adorned with the Dress and Costume of Low Country Dance - intricately created by Pala using the throw away artifacts of Urban life, pen clips, bottle tops, plastic bottles, hair clips etc.

Through her black and white photographs Menika van der Poorten (Photographer and lecturer in Photography at VAFA - the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts) investigates the transformation of Pala's creations - from being an integral part of Pala's personal exploration - to its more functional mode of being wearable items. Through the camera lens Menika presents Palas work in a 'real' context where the dancer performs wearing Palas creations.

Traditionally in Low Country Dance the dancer makes his/her own costumes and the costume therefore has sacred connotations for the wearer.

One that invests its wearer with the energy and spirit of the dance and the ritual. Pala's rations draws on those traditions and re-invests them with a different meaning in an urban context.
