SLDS Taekwondo team wins first international medal Sri Lanka Defence Services Taekwondo team returned home last Friday after a successful tour in Croatia. The team flew to Croatia in the first week of August to take part in the 15th World Military Taekwondo Championship which was held from August 8 to 17 in Zagreb, Croatia. Lance Corporal R. Tharaka Madihahewa of Sri Lanka Army who set a big challenge to other foreign contestants, won a bronze medal in under 84 kg weight Category. This is the first instance where a Defence Services Team could win a medal in a world military championship. In addition, the team received the Encouragement Award too. Twenty two countries including Sri Lanka, USA, China, Korea, Italy, Germany, Iran, Australia and Canada participated in the contest in which the Korean Defence Services Team won the championship. Brigadier K.S. Fernando, Chairman Sri Lanka Defence Services Taekwondo Committee and Master Ki Su Lee, National and Army Taekwondo coach participated in the championship as Chief de Mission and the Head Coach respectively. Warrant Officer II H.H. Premathilake, Staff Sergeant M. Ranjith, Corporal R.B.N. Rathnayake, Corporal H.J.S. Hewavitharana, Corporal H.M.K.G.D.K. Herath, Lance Corporal G.G.J.S. Kumara, Lance Corporal S.H.D. Chaminda Kumara and Lance Corporal B.J.P. Gomas were the other members who represented the Sri Lanka Army for the championship in Croatia. |
