Sunil Ratnaweera killing: Police teams collect vital information

by Sarath Malalasekera

The three special Police teams deployed to trace the killers of Sunil Ratnaweera, the first suspect in the murder of PA Southern Provincial Council Minister M. K. Ranjith alias Chandi Malli, has collected vital information about the assailants, and their arrest is imminent, said Southern Range DIG D. W. Prathapasinghe who is directing investigations into the killing.

The three police teams were deployed on the direction of IGP T. E. Anandarajah, said DIG Prathapasinghe yesterday.

Sunil Ratnaweera was abducted and killed at Angunukolapelessa while he was being taken to Tangalle remand prison from the Embilitptiya Magistrates Court on August 20 afternoon.

Colombo Crime Division (CCD) director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda who is investigating the murder of Provincial Minister M. K. Ranjith recently told the Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne that they had to arrest more suspects in connection with the killing.

Filing a further report, CCD officials said that they had not completed the investigations into the killing.

The four suspects who were taken into custody in connection with the murder of PA Southern Provincial Council Minister Ranjith were earlier further remanded by Judge Karunaratne who directed the prisons authorities to produce the suspects before the Embilipitiya, Hambantota and Ambalangoda Magistrates Courts on the due dates. The Provincial Council Minister was shot dead by unidentified gunmen close to the High Security Zone at York Street, Colombo on May 25 morning.

He was killed while returning after appearing before the CID on a court order. Southern Range DIG D.W. Prathapasinghe is directing investigations conducted by Director CCD Senior SP Sarath Lugoda, SP Gamini Dissanayake of the Legal Division and ASP Hettiarachchi.
