by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A businessman alleged to be a "cellular fortune teller" who had defrauded over Rs. 700,000 from his clients was shot dead yesterday at the Samanmal Hotel, Medewatta, Matara by an unidentified gang, Matara Police said. Four shots fired at the businessman using a 9mm pistol had killed him on the spot while seriously injuring his female companion. While returning home at around 10.30 a.m. following a court hearing against him for fraud, the couple had stopped at the hotel for tea. The gang had fled the place in a car, Police said. According to Police, a court case had been filed against the businessman who is alleged to have defrauded and cheated the customers for over Rs. 700,000 by way of fortune telling. The deceased had been employed as an alleged "professional" fortune teller from India for several years where he had first spread the message, with the help of his supporters to the public in Matara and Devundara that he is a well-known fortune teller in India who could only be contacted through his cellular phone, Police said. His supporters who spread the message, collected the money, while the fortune teller forecast the future of the clients through his mobile, in Sinhala, Police added. The businessman Handige Sunil Shantha is also said to be a coordinating officer at the Fisheries Department where he is responsible for a project in Devundara. The Police are conducting investigations under the directions of the DIG Southern Range D.W.Prathapasinghe to arrest the suspects behind the shooting. |
