Serenity at Sigiriya

This is where I stayed on my first day in Dambulla. I arrived late at night and all I could tell at that hour was that I had to walk through a long, open corridor to reach my room on the ground level, which was spacious and the shower had lots of hot water - which I desperately needed to use.

In the morning, I took the tour of discovery. The first thing I realised was - my room opened right into nature, into a courtyard of grass which was not manicured, but somewhat left to itself. I was intrigued. As I walked into the open restaurant, I realised that that was the idea. The entire resort is an expression of freedom, of intrinsic naturalness. Of course, they tend to the hedges and grow the flowers and so on, but it is done unobtrusively that you have this inexplicable feeling of being with unbridled nature.

There are 80 rooms and the build-up area has been deliberately limited to the least. The rooms are only on the ground level. They are not super luxury (no TVs or minibars - but who needs them!) but certainly charming.

And the most fastinating aspect of the resort is the fact that it offers a head-on view of the Sigiriya Rock - as you enjoy scrambled eggs at the restaurant, a mist hugs and releases the rock. It is overwhelming.

Recreation options at the resort include a swimming pool, tennis, volleyball, water polo, indoor games, jungle treks on elephant back.

Bird watching, of course, is the primary occupation at all the resorts at Dambulla and Sigiriya is no exception. The hotel has identified several trails - interestingly mapped out in the lobby.

There is also an Ayurveda Centre offering healing therapies, herbal steam and massages - all conducted according to ancient prescriptions.
