SriLankan to fly 54 schoolchildren to Maldives In a move to celebrate one hundred years of international civil aviation since the Wright brothers invented the first aircraft in 1903, the national carrier SriLankan Airlines has organised a countrywide competition where 54 children will be taken on a day tour to the Maldives on October 11. The national carrier has sent a communique to over 10,000 schools in the country (all barring international schools) with a questionnaire and six children each will be selected from the nine Provinces, SLA Head of Corporate Communications Chandana De Silva said. The questions are: 1. Who produced the first aircraft in the world and in what year? 2. In which year was the first passenger aircraft built? 3. In which year was Sri Lanka's national carrier commenced? 4. What is the name of Sri Lanka's International Airport? 5. What is the capital city of Maldives? Applicants should be between the ages of 16 and 18 and all entries should be made in their handwriting. Other eligibility criteria are that the entries should be accompanied by their names, addresses, names of schools and the applications should be supported by the Principal's signature. Sri Lankan will have a draw to select the six entries from each Province and the winners will be housed at the Jetwing Tamarind Hotel on the night of October 10. The SriLankan Airlines flight carrying the 54 schoolchildren will leave for Male at 7.25 am on October 11 and will return to Colombo at 10.30 pm on the same day. They will be taken to a school in the Maldives and also an island there. Three celebrities- a member from the national cricket and athletics teams and a film star will also be taken on board to Male as a part of the celebrations. |
