Pakistan u-19 hit back strongly by Chris Dhambarage, KURUNEGALA, Wednesday. The touring Pakistan under 19 team after being dismissed for 191 runs hit back strongly to reduce the Sri Lanka under 19 side to 139 for 5 in their first innings on the opening day of their second three day match at the Welagedera Stadium, here today. Sri Lanka got a good start through their openers Upul Tharanga and Damindu Kularatne but Pakistan came back into the game by capturing three quick wickets. Kosala Kulasekera and Farveez Maharoof repaired the early damage with some intelligent batting before the former departed for a well compiled 33. Maharoof survived the latter stages and was unbeaten on 21. Earlier Sri Lanka under 19 did well to restrict the visitors for under two hundred runs in their first innings while putting up a splendid performance on the field. Skipper Maharoof and Chanaka picked up an early wicket to reduce the Pakistanis to 2 for 2 at one stage. However Afaq Rahim and Shahid Yousaf rescued Pakistan with a third wicket stand of 51 runs. Yousaf went on to hit a top score of 94 off 115 deliveries with the help of fourteen boundaries. Together with Salman Quadir they were associated in a fifth wicket partnership of 110 runs. Pakistan had a good chance of piling up a big first innings score as long as this pair were at the crease. But both departed within the space of four runs and the innings collapsed sensationally from thereonwards against some penetrative bowling. Spinner Ganganath Ratnayake polished off the Pakistan under 19 tail quickly during his seven overs spell while conceding only 24 runs. He received good support from Dunil Abeydeera and newcomer Kosala Kulasekera with both capturing a wicket each. |
