Addressing the media, Peiris said that certain Government members including a director of the Aviation Authority were making arrangements for the stay of LTTE activists like Pulidevan at the Hilton Hotel located near the Presidential Secretariat. "From the recent political killings in the North and East it is clear that the LTTE was carrying out a campaign to eliminate its political opponents. Everybody knows that the President is number one on their hit list. Reports of the Army has indicated that several types of weapons can be used to attack the President's House from the Hilton Hotel," he said. Denying Government reports that Pulidevan was in Colombo only for political activities, Peiris said it was well-known that the LTTE has always used its political activities to gather information useful for political killings. The President has also written to Defence Minister Tilak Marapana on Tuesday stating that providing protection for non-LTTE Tamil parties was the responsibility of the Government. The Defence Minister has been instructed to come up with whatever measures required to protect these parties, within a week. Commenting on the current situation of the peace process, Peiris said that the President was of the view that negotiations with the LTTE should continue and a political solution should be reached for the national problem irrespective of what Government comes to power. |
