PM to visit India

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to leave for Chennai tomorrow in order to deliver the "Millennium Lecture - 2003" of the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, the Prime Minister's office informed yesterday.

On August 23, the Prime Minister will take part in the inauguration ceremony of "Virtual Academy for Food Security and Rural Prosperity", an institute affiliated to the Swaminathan Foundation.

On the same evening, the Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver the "Millennium Lecture 2003" in the Triple Helix Auditorium of Central Leather Research Institute of India, the PM's office states.

N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of Hindu Group of Publications will introduce the Prime Minister for the "Millennium Lecture 2003". M. S. Swaminathan, Chairman of the Foundation will also be present on the occasion.

Help save his life

Ranga Asela Kumara (26) of No. 278, Bodhirajapura, Werahera, Boralesgamuwa is suffering from an acute heart and lung disease and Doctors at the Madras Medical Mission Hospital, Chennai India who examined him have recommended a heart and lung transplant as the only way to cure him.

The transplant to be done at a hospital in Switzerland (Centre Hospitaler Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne) is estimated to cost around Rs. 3,500,000 (45,000 Swiss francs). Ranga Asela says this is completely beyond his means due to his present economic plight and requests philanthropists and the general public to help save his life by sending whatever financial contributions possible. All contributions should be remitted to account number 207-057530-1 at the People's Bank, Maharagama Branch No. 306.

PC, child killed in shooting

A former Police constable and a six year old child were killed yesterday in a shooting which took place in Moratuwa last evening.

Police said the incident took place around 4.00 pm yesterday in the Katubedda area on the Galle road. The constable had been travelling in a three wheeler at the time of the incident while the killers had come in a separate vehicle.

The former Police Constable is said to be a suspect in the Kumar Ponnambalam assassination. The shooting had taken place in the vicinity of a large number of people on the Galle road. Police said during the fire, a six year old girl travelling in a separate van had also sustained injuries and later succumbed. The girl, a resident of Panadura area was going with her family members to see a relative who is hospitalised in Colombo.

Two other persons had also been injured in the incident. The killers had left the scene before the Police arrived.

Moratuwa Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.

Dissanayaka Mu-diyanselage Gun-awathie Dissan-ayake of "Samanpaya" Kirindigalla, Rideebendiella, Mahawa is suffering from a hole in the heart and needs surgical treatment to save her life. According to her medical consultants the heart operation will cost approximately Rs. 400,000 which is beyond her financial capabilities.
