by Manjula Fernando The third round of talks between the university non-academic trade union members and University Grants Commission officials failed yesterday with workers insisting on a Rs. 2000 interim allowance until the planned pay hike for public servants next year. Tertiary Education and Training Minister Kabeer Hashim also attended yesterday's meeting which went on for over six hours from 11.00 am onwards, in a bid to find common ground and halt the week long strike by the non academics. At the meeting, the trade unions have insisted on their demand for Rs.2000 allowance if a pay hike cannot be made until year end. A spokesman for the ministry said Minister Hashim requested the workers to return to work from today since the Ministry has already taken action to rectify about 21 of their demands and others are still being considered. "But there was no positive response from the workers' side at the end of the long discussion," the spokesman said. At the meeting minister instructed the UGC Chairman to issue the circulars concerning the 21 concessions before the 31st of this month with specific time frames for implementation. The minister has also promised a Rs.1000 allowance to be added to their salary from this month. The trade union members have refused to give up their main demands. |
