Close Police-public rapport vital for peace - SSP

Maskeliya group correspondent

Cecil Perera, Senior Superintendent of Hatton Police Division addressing the general meeting of Peace Council of Maskeliya-Upcot at St. Joseph's TMV, Main Hall, Maskeliya said that there should be a close relationship between the Police and the Peace Councils on the area in order to preserve peace and harmony in the area, among Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims.

The general public meeting was organised by the Maskeliya Police led by C.C. Weeraratne, OIC and IP with the combination of the Peace Councils of the area. Prior to the commencement of the meeting, the SSP and the ASP of Hatton H. Kumarasinghe were taken in a procession to the venue from Maskeliya Police Station.

SSP Cecil Perera said that today the entire country was launching for peace. Maskeliya Police area under the Chief Adminstration of Hatton Police Division has become a peaceful town, in the town among the three communities living together for many decades without any divisions and they have been living as sons and daughters of one Sri Lanka.

This had been proved in the past. Because the general public and the Police have been in continuous relationship with each other.

On both sides there may be some mistakes while performing duties and implementing law and order, but it should be solved through discussions, before putting it into action. Police as well as the public make mistakes and if anybody wants to make a complain against any Police officer, he is allowed to do so to the higher authorities. The culprits on the both sides should be eradicated or punished. Every Police Station throughout the country has been provided with Tamil Police constables. Every national has a right to give his or her complaint in his or her mother tongue. The Tamils can make their complaints in the Tamil language and if a Tamil Officer is not at the Police station at the time, he or she can write the complaint in a letter and hand it over to the Police. The problem of the complainant will be looked into. He said that during Sri Pada season a temporary Police Station was kept opened for the facilities of the pilgrims. But, now it has been made a permanent one and Police services will be given to people of the area for 24 hours. The Police Station covers from Samandevale at Mousakelle to the top of Sri Pada covering plenty of tea estates in the area. We too are receiving our salaries, vehicles and all other facilities from the Government and those facilities were maintained from people's money. So, the public have every right to move with the Police freely. Finally he said that peace should exist from everyone's heart and there should be a permanent peace among everyone with good understanding. All problems of the people of the area can be solved easily if there was peace and good cordial and friendship among the Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese.

They can live peacefully and happily." C.C. Weeraratne, OIC and IP proposed the welcome address and he said that there are 24 peace councils under Maskeliya Police area and there is peace, prevailing at all places and towns and estates too.
