by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Sunil Ratnaweera, the main accused in the murder of PA Provincial Minister, M.K.Ranjith alias "Chandi Malli" was shot dead yesterday after an armed gang snatched him from the Prison bus which was returning from the Embilipitiya Magistrate's Court to the Tangalle Prison. According to the Angunakolapelessa Police, the accused was taken to the Embilipitiya Magistrate's Courts for trial at around 10.00 a.m. yesterday by the Jailor and four Prison officials, accompanied by two policemen. Following the court proceedings, Sunil was taken in the prison bus to the Tangalle prison where the two policemen had followed the bus in a van.

The two policemen had suspected a white van carrying around ten people were following the prison bus. Later, near the Wetiya area, along the Tangalle-Nonagama road, the unidentified gang who had come in a white van had blocked the road and had opened fire at the prison vehicle carrying the accused using a T56 weapon. They had then forcibly taken him in their van to Redigama where he was found shot dead in handcuffs.

A prison official was killed during the firing while another was seriously injured. The Southern Province DIG, D.W. Prathapasingha has given orders to 15 Police stations in Southern Province to track down the killers, who are still at large.
