by Chatura Widyaratne The Government, at its Cabinet Meeting held yesterday (Aug.20) took several important decisions to provide immediate relief to numerous problems affecting the day to day lives of the people. At this Cabinet meeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stressed the urgency to implement the proposed electricity supply project which is estimated to cost Rs. 6000 million. It was also disclosed that as a measure to help the paddy farmers, an import duty of Rs. 2.00 is being levied now, in respect of each kilo of rice imported. Provision of employment to 10,000 unemployed graduates living throughout the island, the implementation of 1300 electricity projects to supply electricity to ordinary consumers of all districts other than those in the Districts of Colombo and Gampaha, the issue of relevant letters of appointment to youth who are receiving training in Youth Brigades, the allocation of Rupees 10 million in respect of each electorate for the purpose of purchasing building materials to construct houses and the renovation of the dilapidated road network are among the measures the Cabinet decided to pay attention in the immediate future. The Cabinet also decided to allocate five million rupees for each of the local authorities other than the Municipal Councils to provide infrastructure facilities to implement the proposed projects. |
