Colombo Bulls lose to Sampath Bank

by Ken de Joodt

It was a brilliant display of basketball at the opening game of the Colombo Super League Basketball Tournament 2003, last Saturday at the Police basketball courts, Bambalapitiya, before a large gathering of basketball fans. Spearheading the attack was Chamath Danawansha of Sampath Bank, scoring at will, almost half the points scored by his team and defending well. Good support was had from Rasika Prabath and Hesan Premachandra to carry the Sampath Bank to a sensational victory.

However, Colombo Bulls stampeded their way through to lead in the first quarter by 14 pts to 10 pts, but were slowly edged out by the bankers in the second quarter, to register 25 pts to 23 pts and then Sampath Bank went for the kill by knocking-up 47 pts to 44 pts in the final quarter, to win a well-fought game.

Aruna Wickramage (16 pts) scored best for the Bulls, while Duke Rajapakse did well with 8 pts and that enabled the Bulls to keep within reach of the Sampath score. Mitsui OSK Lines Pvt Ltd are the main sponsors of this prestigious basketball club tournament, conducted by the Colombo Basketball Club in association with the Colombo District Basketball Association. The tournament will continue each day at 7 p.m. at the Police Depot basketball courts up to the grand finals on the 7th of September.
