Security strengthened in Samanturai, Muttur by Ranil Wijayapala Muslim Affairs Minister Rauff Hakeem had detailed discussions with Senior Police Officers in Ampara district to strengthen security in the Samanthurai area following the killing of two Muslims on Sunday night. The killing of two Muslims in Samanthurai added to the already prevailing tense situation in the East following the killing of the two Muslim youths in Chevanayakampuram in Trincomalee last week. According to Police, two Muslims identified as A. Ibralebbe (40) a father of three children and K.L. Ismail (29) a father of two children were gunned down in Sena Vaddai in Samanthurai on Sunday night. Sources added Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has also been briefed about the situation by MPs representing the area. The two Muslims had gone to their paddy fields in Sena Vaddai on motorbike. All the shops were closed in Samanthurai area yesterday. However, Samanthurai Police said normality prevailed in the area and day-to-day activities were not hit by any incident despite rumours. Minister Rauff Hakeem who was in Kandy following his visit to Muttur last week rushed to the Samanthurai area to observe the situation. Eastern Province Senior DIG Nevil Wijesinghe also participated at this discussion which focussed on tightening security in the area. According to Samanthurai Police the two bodies were handed over to the relatives around mid noon yesterday and the funeral took place with the participation of Minister Hakeem and MP Anwar Ismail and hundreds of Muslims last evening. Acting SLMM Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday that the SLMM was investigating into the incident. |
