Enhanced welfare facilities for Lankan migrant workers - Minister

by Ananda Kannangara.

Enhanced welfare facilities, benefits and new insurance policies implemented by the Government for the benefit of Sri Lankan migrant workers in the recent past have persuaded them to seek more foreign employment in future, Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

He made these observations at a ceremony held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium to mark the distribution of scholarships to children of migrant workers. Around 1671 children received Rs.33 million worth scholarships at the ceremony.

Accordingly 497 students who passed the Grade five scholarship examination received Rs. 15,000 each while 956 children qualified to do the G.C.E (AL) Examination received Rs. 20,000 each. Another batch of 218 students who are persuing University education received Rs. 30,000 each.

Minister Samarasinghe highlighted the invaluable service being rendered by migrant workers to swell the country's economy.

"It is also the duty of the Government to look into the welfare needs of these children at a time their parents are working abroad," he said.

He said the Government is confident that they are taking all steps to fulfil the ultimate obligation of both migrant workers and their families.

The Minister emphasised the importance of new educational policies and said that these new policies were implemented to develop the educational skills of children as well as their extra curriculum activities.

He said that the Government has planned to find more employment opportunities for Lankan workers in countries including Italy, Cyprus, Singapore and Hongkong in addition to the traditional Middle East region through the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.
